One of the downsides of the new PLAYSTATION 3 is its incompatibility with older controllers. I have a lot of custom controllers for my PS2 which eventually won't work anymore. Maybe the biggest disappointment is the no longer supported Guitar Hero controller.
Sure, there are already a couple of USB converters that were initially built to support the PS2 Dualshock controller on your Windows computer. But those USB converters have not been designed to be used on the PS3. The biggest issue with those controllers is the missing PS button that is necessary in order to support all features of the contoller. Now I found the solution to this: the bigben PS3 Converter Pad. Specifically designed to be used with your PLAYSTATION 3 it can also be used with your Windows computer. Different than the other USB converters, this one has a PS button that is used to first of all register the contoller and of course to access the PS button functions during a game. If you are using your Dualshock controller, the analog button on the controller simulates the PS button as well. In order to use the converter resp. the controller that is connected to the converter you first have to press the PS button after you've plugged in the USB connector. Similar to the SIXAXIS controller, the Converter Pad has 4 LED that show you the id of the controller after it has been registered. As the converter does not have a battery you always have to register the converter every time you turn off your PLAYSTATION 3. The first tests show that the controller works as intended with both PLAYSTATION 3 and PS2 games. There is no lag or anything like that when it comes to the controls. My next test was Guitar Hero. I used the second edition of the game with the PLAYSTATION 3. At the beginning everything seem to be fine. The game started as normal on the PS2 and you can move the screen selection as usual. But if you wanna select something, which is usually the green button, this doesn't work. The blue button now works as the select button and the yellow as the cancel button, which should actually be the red one. In other words, some of the buttons are switched. With this behaviour the game is basically not playable. Very strange. So far I havn't seen any working solution for this. The last test was in regards to the rumble functionality. With firmware 1.7 installed i couldn't get my PS2 controller to shack just a little bit. Obviously it is not supported yet. Not sure if the new firmware just enables some of the available custom controller and force feedback wheels or also the standard Dualshock. So far I havn't checked all my controllers yet. It could actually be that some of those controllers show the same buggy behaviour as the Guitar Hero controller. Anyway, with a price of EUR 14,99 the PS2 to PS3 converter is a must have accessory for any PS2 owner. Sure, there are a couple of deficencies that eventually could get resolved, but until there is no other converter that fix those issues, this one is the best you can get.
